How to Delete Instagram Account – Permanently or Temporarily

This guide outlines the steps to delete your Instagram account permanently or temporarily deactivate it, as well as things to know before deleting your account.

1. Things to know before delete Instagram account

  • Your profile, videos, photos, comments, likes and followers will be permanently removed when you delete your account.
  • You can temporarily deactivate your account instead of permanently deleting the account.
  • You must first log in to your account in order to request account deletion.
  • Before deleting your account, Download a copy of your data on Instagram (Profile menu → Your Activity → Download your information → follow process).
  • You can create a new account with your old username or add username to another account, after your Instagram account has been deleted (and if username has not been taken by someone else).

2. How to delete an Instagram account permanently?

To delete your Instagram account permanently:

  1. Open Delete Your Account page in the browser.
  2. Login to account (Login with the account which you want to delete).
  3. Select the reason option for “Why do you want to delete [account_name]?”
  4. Re-enter your account password.
  5. Click Delete [username].

Note: Make sure that you are login with the account which you want to delete.

3. How to temporarily deactivate an Instagram account?

To temporarily deactivate your Instagram account:

  • Log into instagram.com from the browser.
  • Click the profile picture in the top right corner.
  • Click Profile and click Edit Profile.
  • Scroll down and click Temporarily deactivate my account.
  • Select the reason option for “Why are you deactivating your account?”
  • Re-enter your account password.
  • Click Temporarily Deactivate Account.
  • Click Yes to confirm.

Temporarily account deactivation makes your account, your profile, photos, comments and likes hidden until you reactivate it by logging back in.

Note: Account deactivation is limited to once a week.

4. Delete or Deactivate Instagram account from Accounts Centre

You can delete or temporarily deactivate your Instagram account from the Accounts Centre in app.

Profile menu → Settings and privacy → Accounts Centre → Personal details → Account ownership and control → Deactivation or deletion → [Choose account] → Choose Delete account / Deactivate account and follow process.

Note: As per Instagram Help Center, you may not be able to delete or deactivate your account from the Accounts Center at this time.
